Valerie Young and Ivan Mauger photographed with
the Hon Clayton Cosgrove Minister of Sport and
recreation after they were inducted into the
Legends of Canterbury Sport Hall of Fame in
Christchurch on the 23rd May 2008.
Valerie Young won her first national title
during the 1955-56 season, and her last in the
1981-82 season. An incredible span of time for
an athlete to compete successfully at this
level, it also includes an astonishing 37
National Titles, across the shot, discus and
pentathlon.
Her first ever international competition was the
1956 Melbourne Olympics, where as a young 19 year
old, Val finished 5th in the shot. She
went on to compete at two further Olympic Games,
achieving two fourth placing in the shot behind
